What Does a Visitor Center Manager Do?
Prospective students, alumni and first-time visitors often arrive on campus with a variety of needs, from a parking pass to a tour that is about to leave. Meeting those needs is what a visitor center manager's team does all day, at the front desk, on tours and at events. The manager also runs the budget and staff.

Visitor Center Manager Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of a visitor center manager include:
- Run the visitor center front desk, making sure guests get directions, maps and parking help.
- Hire, train and schedule student tour guides, front desk staff and volunteers.
- Plan tour routes and scripts with admissions and communications staff, updating them each year.
- Book group visits for schools, alumni and conference guests, and confirm arrangements in advance.
- Prepare the center's budget and track spending on staff, printing and supplies.
- Keep brochures, displays and screens current with campus news and upcoming events.
- Collect visitor feedback and numbers, and report trends to university leadership.
- Coordinate with police, parking and facilities on large events and VIP visits.
- Stock and oversee small retail items such as maps, books and souvenirs.
- Answer phone and email inquiries from the public about programs, events and campus services.

Education and Training
Once you have experience running tours, events or a front desk you will need to show you can lead staff and manage a budget to move into this job. A bachelor's degree is typical. From there, you could move into admissions, alumni relations or event management.
