Lifeguard Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of a lifeguard include:

  • Monitor swimmers and pool or beach areas for signs of distress
  • Enforce swimming rules and facility safety policies
  • Perform water rescues and provide emergency first aid
  • Administer CPR and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) when needed
  • Inspect facilities and equipment for safety hazards
  • Test and maintain water chemistry and quality levels
  • Complete incident and rescue reports
  • Educate patrons on water safety and facility rules
  • Maintain physical fitness and rescue readiness through regular training
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures for aquatic facilities
