About This Resume

As an event planner you'll book venues, negotiate with vendors and keep a hundred small details on track at once. This might involve a donor dinner, a trade show booth, a campus orientation or a wedding. Plenty of people come to event work from communications, marketing or hospitality, and the resume that gets them hired shows events they ran from start to finish.

Employers want proof you can handle money, people and deadlines at the same time. The size of your events comes first, meaning headcount and budget, followed by vendor and venue work and then the promotion side: invitations, social posts, registration pages and turnout. Show a day that went wrong, too. Moving 250 guests indoors in 90 minutes when a storm came through says more about you than any adjective.

What to Include

  • Events you ran, each with its type, headcount, budget and your role
  • Vendor, venue and contract work, including bids, negotiation, deposits and final counts
  • Budgets you managed and how each one finished against plan
  • Promotion and registration: invitations, email, social media, sign-up pages and turnout
  • Work on the day itself, such as the run of show (the minute-by-minute schedule), staffing, setup and fixing problems
  • Software you use for registration, floor plans, budgets and design
  • Certificates or training, such as food safety, responsible alcohol service or a meeting-planning credential

Tips for Your Event Planning Resume

  • Give every event a size. Headcount and budget let a reader picture the job in seconds.
  • Tell the whole story of your biggest event: the budget you set, the vendors you booked, how you promoted it and how it finished.
  • If you are coming from communications, lead with events you promoted and ran yourself, and add a portfolio link with invitations or press notes you wrote.
  • Include one problem you solved on the day. Event managers hire for calm under pressure, and a single real example proves it better than the word "flexible."
  • Name your tools. Postings often list registration platforms, floor-plan software and design apps by name, and matching them helps your resume get noticed.
  • Keep the design clean even though the work is creative. A tidy page suggests tidy events.
  • Weddings and parties for friends count if you handled real money and vendors. Describe them the way you would a paid event and label them as volunteer or freelance work.
