Electron Microscopy Tech Duties
SUMMARY
This is advanced technical work of a specialized nature in an
electron microscope laboratory.
Work involves preparing tissue for viewing under an electron
microscope and aligning and operating the microscope. Work is
performed under the general supervision of an investigator or a
technical supervisor and is reviewed by observation of results
obtained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Trims, orients, and fixes biological tissue; prepares fixatives
and other solutions.
Dehydrates and embeds tissue.
Cuts and stains thick sections of tissue; scans and selects
areas for thin sectioning.
Cuts ultrathin sections by use of a specially designed
microtome.
Places grids on the electron microscope.
Takes routine or scanning micrographs of the specimen.
Develops and produces enlargements.
Cleans and maintains electron microscope.
Performs such special electron microscope procedures as
preparation of whole specimens, autoradiography, and
cytochemistry.
Trains other in the use of the electron microscope.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, supplemented by college
level courses in biology or a related subject; and considerable
experience in laboratory work including experience in electron
microscope work; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the procedures and techniques used in
an electron microscope laboratory.
Considerable knowledge of chemistry and biology.
Some knowledge of special electron microscope techniques.
Ability to perform tasks requiring a high degree of manual
dexterity.
Ability to train others in the use of the equipment in an
electron microscope laboratory.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and others who use
the electron microscope. |
