About This Resume

A supervisor's job is distinguished from a manager's in that the supervisor spends most of the shift on the floor with the crew. People in this role need planning, coaching, and safety skills, as they are required to work closely with brand-new hires, twenty-year veterans and the managers upstairs. Many come straight off the crew. That means the resume has to show the moment you started leading others, even before you had the title.

Supervisors ensure the safety and output of a shift for the crew, the customers, and the people running the building. They make sure that breaks are covered, and the day's work is checked and finished on time. Hiring managers look for proof of that before anything else, starting with the size of the crew you ran, the numbers it hit and its safety record.

What to Include

• Crew size and makeup, such as 32 pickers, loaders and forklift drivers on nights
• Results your team hit: output, on-time shipments, quality scores or sales against target
• Safety record and training, including OSHA 10 or 30 cards and any certifications you teach
• People you hired, trained or promoted, since building people up is a big part of the job
• Scheduling, timekeeping and labor planning tools you've used
• Lead or acting supervisor experience, even informal, with dates

• If you were a lead without the title, say so in a bullet, such as "Ran the receiving dock as acting lead for eight months while the role was vacant."
• "Supervised warehouse staff" leaves a manager guessing. "Cut late trailers from about 15 a week to 3 by staging outbound loads by door" tells them what changed on your watch.
• Keep your own numbers too. The personal records and lead tasks that got you promoted still tell a hiring manager how you work, especially if this would be your first supervisor job.
• Supervising can be draining and sometimes lonely. Supervisors sit between the crew and management and spend a lot of time settling small disputes or covering no-shows. They're prone to rough weeks, such as peak season, inventory counts, and audits, so one bullet about how you got through one is worth more than a list of leadership traits.
• Supervisors often move into operations, training or safety roles later. Show any teaching or safety work now.
• Give a crew size for every job, even if it was four people, so a reader can watch the number of people you lead grow from one role to the next.
• Your reference list is more important than you realize and covers more than just your last boss. The people you name may confirm your dates, but more importantly they tell an employer how you treat a crew, so include one person who worked for you.
