About This Resume

A marketing resume is more of a campaign than you realize and does more than just list the channels you have run: it has one reader, one message and one action it wants from them. The bullets you write may show which tools you know, but more importantly they show whether you think in results. Coordinators, specialists and generalists often apply for the same postings with the same software on their lists. The numbers are what set one apart.

Marketing responsibilities include planning campaigns, writing copy and reporting on what worked. To stand out in this field, you should have hands-on experience with at least one paid channel and a flair for turning a report into a decision. Hiring managers usually read for the channel first (email, paid search, social, content or events), then the budget you handled and the result, such as leads, sales or cost per lead. The tools come after that.

What to Include

  • Channels you have run: email, paid search, paid social, search engine optimization (SEO), content, events or print
  • Budgets you managed, even small ones, as a monthly or yearly figure
  • Results in numbers: leads, sales, sign-ups, open and click rates, cost per lead or return on ad spend
  • Tools for email and automation (HubSpot, Mailchimp, Klaviyo), analytics (Google Analytics 4) and ad buying
  • Links to two or three work samples, such as an email, a landing page or a results report with private figures removed
  • Tests you ran and what you changed because of them
  • Current certifications, such as Google Ads or HubSpot

Tips for Your Marketing Resume

  • Put a number on every result you can. "Managed social media" tells a reader very little, while "Grew Instagram leads from about 40 to 150 a month" tells them what you might do for them.
  • State budgets plainly, even small ones. A $3,000 monthly ad budget spent well is worth a line, because it shows you have made spending decisions and lived with the results.
  • When you give a result, give its time frame. That is, if you write that sign-ups doubled, make sure the same line says over how long and from what starting point.
  • If you are early in your career, count the marketing you did for a club, a class project or a family business. Growing a campus group's email list or running ads for a friend's bakery is real work with real numbers.
  • Link two or three samples near the top of the page. Remove any figures an employer or client would want kept private, and say in a few words what each sample shows.
  • Match the posting's tools and channels word for word. Many marketing teams screen for one platform, such as HubSpot or Google Ads, and a resume that names it gets a closer read.
  • Show one test and what it taught you. A line about a subject line or landing page test shows a manager that you change course when the numbers say so.
