About This Resume

Finance managers read a resume like a spreadsheet, looking for the figure that doesn't add up. One wrong number can undo an otherwise careful application, which is a poor start in a field built on accuracy, since a second read could have prevented it. Whether you're a new graduate or an accountant moving into planning work, the same readers will check your numbers. Precision is the first test.

Finance hiring is often structured and the standards for accuracy and speed are high. You may face a modeling test in the first round and a case discussion in the second. Getting that far is hard but is achievable when your resume already shows reviewers what they check first: the models, systems and dollar amounts you've worked with. In smaller companies, hiring may be looser.

What to Include

  • The size of what you handled in dollars: budgets, portfolios, deal values or revenue
  • Models and analyses by type, such as forecasts, variance reports, three-statement models or valuation work
  • Systems by name: accounting and planning software, your Excel skills in detail and reporting tools such as Power BI
  • Exams and licenses with dates, such as CFA levels passed, CPA status or securities registrations
  • Decisions your work supported, in a phrase: a plant expansion, a price change, a loan approval
  • Education with honors, and your GPA if you're within a few years of graduating

Tips for Your Finance Resume

  • "Prepared budgets" could mean a petty cash fund or a $300 million operating plan. Name the figure and what it covered.
  • If a number is confidential, round it or describe its size, such as "a nine-figure budget" or "a mid-market acquisition," and keep client names off the page.
  • Keep any cash planning, treasury or board reporting work on the page, since it sits on the career path toward finance manager and controller jobs.
  • List each CFA level you've passed with its year, such as "Passed CFA Level II (2025)." Steady progress reads as commitment.
  • Readers remember what a model decided, such as a plant expansion that went ahead or a product line that was dropped, so put the decision in the same bullet as the analysis.
  • When you write dollar figures, pick one style and keep it. That is, if one bullet says "$4.2 million," make sure every other figure uses the same style.
