Architectural Designer Duties
SUMMARY
Performs technical architectural work in the design and
development of plans for alterations and repairs to university
buildings.
This individual is responsible for designing, planning, and
drafting detailed specifications for alterations and repair
projects to existing university buildings or new building
construction projects. Work involves contacts with personnel
from university departments and material and equipment vendors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Discusses requirements of alterations and repairs to be made
with appropriate officials; conducts surveys to gather data
needed in design preparation.
Prepares preliminary design sketches for the larger and more
complex projects, including cost estimates.
Following project approval, prepares the final designs,
including the required drafting and specifications.
Performs the drawing and drafting work using AUTOCAD that is
required for each project.
Refers completed designs and specifications to superiors for
review, alterations, and approval.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school or vocational school and two years of additional
course work in a technical school, college, or university with
major course work in architectural drafting and considerable
experience in architectural drafting and design; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience
with CAD is desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of architecture.
Considerable knowledge of modern building construction methods
and materials and of the preparation of specifications.
Considerable knowledge of the terminology, methods, practices,
and techniques of architectural drafting.
Some knowledge of the principles and methods of surveying and
inspecting sites and buildings, preparatory to planning and
designing.
Ability to prepare architectural designs, plans, and
specifications, using AUTOCAD.
Ability to prepare complex schematic drawings from rough
sketches and oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with university personnel.
Skill in designing alterations to buildings and structures and
in preparing accurate drawings and specifications.
