Steamfitter Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work at the journeyman level in the installation,
maintenance, and modification of all parts of a steam
distribution and return system.
An employee in this class should possess expertise in all phases
of pipe fitting. The methods of performing assigned tasks are
usually left to the journeyman STEAM FITTER. Work assignments,
both oral and written, are received from a supervisor; progress
and completion are reviewed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Installs, maintains, modifies, improves, and repairs all parts
of the steam distribution/condensate return piping system.
Prepares assemblies for installation; performs cutting,
threading, welding, and pipe-bending operations.
Installs strainers, regulators, traps, pumps, insulation,
valves, etc.
Follows through on written orders and completes required paper
work.
Solders and welds fittings, valves, piping, etc., to insure
proper order.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and
considerable experience as a journeyman STEAM FITTER/welder; or
any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods,
tools, and materials of the welding/steamfitting trade.
Considerable knowledge and ability in pipe-fitting, threading,
soldering, and welding in relation to pressurized steam systems.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety
precautions of the trade.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
and to read and work from simple sketches, diagrams, and broken
parts.
Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment common to
the steamfitting\welding trade.
