Painter Duties
SUMMARY
This is painting work of journeyman level.
Work includes assignments requiring employment of all standard
trade practices and skills. The work often includes finishing
surfaces where standards of beauty, harmony, and workmanship are
exacting. The work is performed under general direction and is
subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion for
appearance and durability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cleans and prepares surfaces to be painted by use of sandpaper,
steel wool, scraper, or soap and water; sandblasts surfaces
preparatory to painting.
Paints interior and exterior walls and ceilings of buildings
with brush roller or spray gun, as required; may varnish, stain,
shellac, or otherwise finish desks, doors, cabinets, moldings,
and floors.
Trims windows and doors; caulks cracks and glazes windows.
Mixes paints, varnishes, shellacs, and enamels; cleans and
stores brushes.
Performs incidental duties such as erecting and moving
scaffolds, washing walls, and cleaning up after a job; operates
pick-up truck.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and some
experience as a journeyman painter; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the characteristics and uses including
mixing and blending of various kinds of paints, varnishes,
enamel, and shellacs.
Considerable knowledge of proper methods of preparing various
surfaces for painting and finishing.
Some knowledge of glazing and paper hanging techniques.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written
instructions.
Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.
Skill in painting with hand brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
