SUMMARY

This is journeyman level work in the fabrication of various types of insulating materials from fiberglass, foamglass, mineral fibers, synthetic rubber, and other products commonly used in the trade.

Work involves installing insulation on steam, hot and chill water piping, refrigeration lines, and air conditioning ducts. Work also involves the proper anchoring of insulation with spotwelded pins, tie wires, metal bands, screws, and other fasteners. Assignments are made in the form of written or oral instructions. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instruction, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Fabricates insulating materials from fiberglass, foamglass, mineral fibers, synthetic rubber, and other products commonly used in the insulation installation trade.

Installs insulation on steam, hot water, chill water, refrigeration lines, piping and fittings, and air conditioning ducts.

Covers insulation on pipes with canvas and installs vapor barriers, waterproofing products, and metal protection sheets.

Anchors insulation with spotwelded pins, tie wires, metal bands, screws, and other fasteners.

Measures, computes, and determines the correct type insulation needed for jobs; provides orders for materials required.

Receives work orders and carries out insulation duties.

Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and some experience as a journeyman insulator; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the insulating trade.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to work from oral and written instructions, sketches, and diagrams.

Ability to maintain good relationships with personnel of other departments.

Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.

Skill in the use of standard tools and equipment of the insulating trade.
