Hvac/Refrigeration Mechanic Duties
SUMMARY
Performs manual work at the journeyman level in the repair and
installation of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating
equipment.
Work involves the application of trade skills in installing,
repairing, maintaining, and servicing refrigeration, air
conditioning, heating, and related equipment. Work is assigned
by a foreman and the employee works with some independence on
routine assignments. Requires the exercise of judgment in
determining the extent of repair and work procedures.
Supervision may be exercised over one or several helpers on
major repair and installation jobs. Work is subject to regular
inspections by a foreman, and is also reviewed by the persons
requesting services. Job requirements, on occasion, require work
beyond normal duty hours resulting from emergency or high
priority work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Overhauls and services refrigeration, air conditioning, and
heating units by repairing or replacing and adjusting worn or
broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum
pumps; tests refrigeration equipment for leaks; repairs or
adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings;
removes and installs motors, thermostats, and humidistats;
adjusts pressure, solenoid, and expansion valves; adds gas to
refrigeration unit, weighing carefully; checks gauges and makes
inspections for preventive maintenance; changes and washes oil
cleaners and air filters.
Assists in installing air conditioning, heating, and related
equipment and components; may supervise and instruct one or
several helpers.
Repairs and maintains component parts of air conditioning,
refrigeration, and ventilating systems in offices, classrooms,
dormitories, apartments, laboratories, kitchen and food service
units.
Performs other work as required in support of general
maintenance activity.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; 2 years of experience in the trade
which may include an apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational
training, or any equivalent combination of training and
experience. Refrigerant handling certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, tools, and
equipment of refrigeration, air conditioning, and/or heating
equipment operation, maintenance, and repair.
Skill in troubleshooting and repair of HVAC related electrical
components (motors, starters, etc.).
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of
the trade.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and
to work from blueprints and sketches.
Skill in locating and correcting defects in refrigeration, air
conditioning, heating, or related equipment.
Skill in the use and operation of tools and equipment used in
the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment. |
