Glass Blower Duties
SUMMARY
This is skilled technical work in designing, fabricating, and
repairing complex scientific glass apparatus used in laboratory
research.
Work involves the performance of skilled technical work in
designing and fabricating complex scientific glassware
equipment; repairing and modifying complex glassware apparatus;
soldering, brazing, and platinum welding metals used as
components in glass apparatus; and consulting with research
personnel in designing and fabricating glass apparatus. Work is
performed under the general supervision of a technical
supervisor and is reviewed through periodic conferences.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Fabricates metals used as components in glass apparatus.
Performs tasks utilizing the glassblowing lathe, cut-off wheel,
annealing oven, drill press, vacuum pump, and a variety of other
tools to fabricate, modify, or repair complex scientific
glassware.
Consults with research personnel on design feasibility; repairs
glass systems broken in laboratories.
Participates in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of
equipment and materials.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by
vocational training in glassblowing and considerable experience
related to this class of work; or any equivalent combination of
training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of laboratory and shop techniques in
scientific glassblowing.
Ability to work from oral instructions, sketches, and
blueprints.
Skill in the fabrication, modification, and repair of glass
apparatus and related media. |
