Electrician Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work at the journeyman level in the installation,
maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment in
various university buildings, shops, and plants, and outside
traffic signal and lighting systems.
Work involves the performance of skilled tasks in accordance
with standard trade practices in the installation, alteration,
maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and
fixtures. Assignments are made in the form of written or oral
instructions and may be accompanied by sketches and blueprints,
although most work results from inspections and trouble
shooting. Work is ordinarily performed independently, subject to
inspection in process or upon completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, and switches
required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in
electrical systems.
Services, repairs, and maintains lighting, power, heating,
cooling, and communications systems.
Repairs and replaces defective parts in motors, generators,
pumps, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers,
contractors, switches, and other electrical fixtures and
appliances.
Tests, locates, and repairs electrical troubles in electrical
circuits and equipment.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and
considerable experience as a journeyman electrician or
completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials,
tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
Considerable knowledge of local and state electrical codes.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
and to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the
electrical trade.
