Boiler Operator Duties
SUMMARY
This is semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and
servicing of steam generating equipment in a heating plant.
Work involves responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and
servicing of high pressure steam boilers, pumps, motors, and
related heating plant equipment on an assigned shift. Work in
general follows established procedures with special instruction
received on changes in operations. Employees working the evening
and night shifts are required to exercise some judgment in
making work decisions. Work is reviewed by supervisory personnel
and through efficient operation of the plant.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates high pressure gas and coal fired boilers in a heating
plant; maintains steam pressure and keeps water at proper level.
Adjusts boiler output to meet changes in demand.
Makes regular readings of control meters; records logs and
charts.
Checks control mechanisms regularly and performs minor servicing
as needed.
Keeps stokers, fans, and floors clean; removes ashes.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the eighth school grade; and some experience in
the operation and maintenance of equipment in a steam heating
plant; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the operation and maintenance of steam heating
plant equipment.
Ability to operate and regulate boilers and pumps and to adjust
output to required specifications.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to read instruments and maintain accurate records.
Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and
written instructions.
Skill in making necessary minor repairs to equipment.
