Academic Advisor Duties
SUMMARY
This is professional work advising students in an area of
academic study. This is the second in a series of four
classifications, and provides academic support by informing
students about academic requirements and assisting students in
the selection of courses. Work is performed under general
supervision and has no supervisory responsibilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops knowledge of the various degrees and majors offered
through the appropriate school or college as well as the general
college and university regulations;
Develops contacts with departments and appropriate faculty;
Assists students who are have academic difficulties and refers
them to the appropriate sources of assistance;
Advises students providing academic procedures, policies, goals,
and objectives, guidance, and problem resolution.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area
of assignment and three years of administrative and appropriate
program experience; OR five years of progressively responsible
work in this area; OR any combination of experience and/or
education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities
have been achieved.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations,
policies and procedures pertaining to a specific degree program;
Thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a
specific area of academic study;
Effective problem solving and interpersonal communication
skills;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships;
Knowledge and competence in computer skills;
Ability to interpret policies and procedures and effectively
communicate these to students and faculty. |
