Laboratory Manager Duties
SUMMARY
This is the sixth in a series of six titles for positions
involving the performance and management of positions in a
scientific laboratory. The Laboratory family series is
identified by a predominant amount of time spent on bench work.
These typical duties include running laboratory protocols, data
collection and recording (performing sample analysis for
external clients, maintaining laboratory equipment, calibrating
laboratory instruments), data management, data analysis and /or
assist with student labs in a "production" lab environment.
Laboratory Technician positions are not connected to specific
research and do not require interpretation of results.
Therefore, Laboratory Technician II and Laboratory Technician
III are distinct and separate titles compared to Research
Technician II and Research Technician III.
The Laboratory Manager II interprets results, adjusts procedures
if needed, assists with the technical design of projects, and
supervises students and staff. This position does not manage a
research project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage division production laboratory and budget.
Determine priority of sample analyses.
Ensure reliability and accuracy of results/reports.
Conduct tours and instruct students.
Maintain statistics; assure proper inventory; write SOP's;
resolve client issues; confer with faculty (or director) to set
pricing and review contracts to determine pricing; attend to
building and equipment repair; participate in seminars; prepare
newsletters.
May write papers for publication in journals.
Responsible for HazMat, radioisotopes and other health and
safety requirements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree and 6 years experience or equivalent
combination required. Specialty certification may be required.
Masters degree preferred
Area-specific certification (i.e.; SCUBA) and training may be
required. Other training will be provided as appropriate (i.e.;
UGA HazMat training and/or Radiation Worker Certification).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have excellent ability to manage personnel and workflow,
maintain equipment and facilities.
Must ensure effective communications with clientele.
