Electron Microscopy Tech Duties
SUMMARY
This is technical work of a specialized nature preparing
material for use in an electron microscope laboratory.
Work involves preparing tissue for viewing under an electron
microscope and learning to operate and maintain the electron
microscope. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an
investigator or trained technician and is reviewed in progress
and upon completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Trims and orients biological tissue; prepares fixative; fixes
tissue in osmic acid or other fixative.
Dehydrates tissue; embeds tissue in plastic.
Cuts thick sections and stains them so that a trained technician
or an investigator can scan and choose sections for thin
sectioning.
Cuts ultrathin sections by use of a specially designed
microtome.
Prepares grids by coating them with a thin membrane and a fine
film of carbon by use of a high vacuum machine, places sections
on grids, and then places grids on the electron microscope.
Assists in developing, enlarging, and processing of micrographs.
Performs routine duties involving care and cleaning of electron
microscope laboratory and ancillary equipment.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, preferably supplemented
by college level courses in biology or a related field;
experience in laboratory work, preferably in a histology
laboratory; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the procedures and techniques used in an
electron microscope laboratory.
Some knowledge of chemistry and biology.
Ability to learn to operate and maintain the electron
microscope.
Ability to perform tasks requiring a high degree of manual
dexterity.
Ability to adapt to new procedures concerning work in the
electron microscope laboratory.
Ability to learn to develop, enlarge, and process micrographs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with supervisors and other employees. |
