Mail Clerk Duties
SUMMARY
This is clerical work in the university post office or in a
departmental mail room.
Work involves performance of routine clerical duties in a
central or departmental mail room and includes duties in serving
as window post office clerk, sorting mail, weighing and stamping
mail, wrapping packages, and collecting and delivering mail. An
employee is expected to work with independence on routine
aspects, although advice and assistance is readily available.
Work is reviewed through observation of performance and results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as window clerk in selling stamps, weighing mail and
determining cost, disposing of or referring complaints,
processing registered matter, and providing information on post
office rules and regulations.
Sorts incoming and outgoing mail; operates postage meter machine
and other standard office equipment not requiring previous
training.
Distributes mail to buildings and offices; delivers and collects
mail.
Prepares monies for daily bank deposits; replenishes supplies
such as stamps and money order forms.
Re-addresses mail that is to be forwarded; wraps packages for
mailing; performs miscellaneous work such as taking supply
inventories, delivering messages, servicing equipment, and
running errands.
Runs errands and participates in janitorial duties on a limited
basis.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school and some experience in
post office work providing a familiarity with rules and
regulations; or any combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of post office rules and regulations
pertaining to processing mail.
Ability to quickly learn assigned tasks including the operation
of standard equipment.
Ability to deal with customers in a pleasant and courteous
manner.
Ability to make routine arithmetical computations quickly and
accurately.
