Senior Communications Officer Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible supervisory work within the University
Police Department.
Work involves dealing with the public through personal contact,
telephone, and radio communications. Work is performed in
accordance with department rules and regulations. A uniform
designated by the department will be worn at all times while on
duty. Employees allocated to this class of work will be assigned
to a specialized function which requires knowledge and abilities
usually acquired through formal training and experience on the
job. Guidance and direction are provided to subordinate
communications personnel. Work requires dedication to public
service often made difficult by emotional or physical stress of
events. Work is reviewed through conferences, written reports,
inspection, and observations of results obtained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspects the equipment associated with job performance and
appearance of subordinate officers.
Relays and explains special orders and information.
Supervises subordinate personnel engaged in communications
functions, maintenance of various records, reports, and related
material.
Prepares and coordinates the training of communications
personnel and speaks before other groups to
inform and train in communications aspects of police work.
Prepares work schedules, records, and reports.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of high school education required with one year
college preferred; experience in communications and public
relations work; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation and comply
with the "Federal Confidentiality of Information Act: in
connection with this sworn position. Ability to work in a
semi-military environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of standard police practices and
techniques.
Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic
control problems.
Ability to deal firmly and courteously with subordinates and the
public.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and on
own initiative, to determine proper course of action.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Ability to meet specific physical requirements that may be
established by competent authority.
