Assistant Chief Histology Tech Duties
SUMMARY
This is a supervisory and technical position dealing with the
operation of a full service histopathology laboratory. The
incumbent will assist administrative superiors in planning and
supervising the work activities of other certified Histology
Technicians, developing and/or implementing new histologic
techniques, training other technicians in advanced histologic
methods, maintaining inventory control, and issuing monthly
progress reports. Work is performed by direction from an
administrative superior and is subject to review.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist administrative superiors in planning and supervising the
work activities of other histology technicians.
Instruct technicians in histologic techniques and procedures
when routine problems arise.
Check quality control of histologic sections before slides leave
the laboratory to determine that work has been properly
performed; sections will be reviewed by a board certified
veterinary pathologist.
Assist superiors in directing the academic study and practical
training of technicians preparing to take the HT (ASCP) registry
examination.
Responsible for accurate completion of tissue submissions and
research projects.
Coordinate activities for correct and timely production of
histologic sections.
Assists superiors in ordering supplies and equipment for the
laboratory.
Consults with pathologists and graduate students concerning
proper fixation, processing, and staining of tissues for
histopathologic diagnosis.
Perform related work as required or instructed by the Laboratory
Director and other superiors.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school and completion of formal training in
histologic techniques. Demonstrated competency in
histotechnology with a minimum of eight years experience in a
clinical or research full-service histopathology laboratory; or
any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Candidates for this position must possess, at the time of
appointment, certification as a Histology Technician from the
Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Extensive knowledge of the principles and procedures of
laboratory science.
Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of
histologic techniques.
Thorough knowledge of proper tissue fixation and staining of
histologic sections.
Basic knowledge of budgetary procedures and ordering supplies
and equipment.
Ability to plan, organize, and supervise work schedules of
subordinates.
