Library Assistant Duties
SUMMARY
This is the second level of a six-level series. This position
performs basic tasks in acquiring, organizing, preserving, or
interpreting information resources that support a narrow range
of library, archives, or records processes. Responsibilities are
of limited complexity and performed within a defined,
structured, prescribed set of parameters. Employees at this
level exercise some discretion in selecting alternative work
methods or in rendering independent judgments. A person in this
position may train and/or monitor student assistants. Contacts
may be within the unit/department or within defined other
Libraries' departments, as well as with a diverse patron
population, to provide information and explain services,
policies or procedures, and to receive information necessary to
complete work assignments. Questions that require interpretation
or are not easily resolved are referred to a supervisor. Work is
performed under direct supervision and is controlled by routine
review and reporting to or consulting with supervisors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Acquiring: Acquires materials and information by physically
collecting, gathering, proofing, photocopying or scanning
materials, by processing new books, updating and posting order
and receipt status, maintaining various bibliographic records,
interfiling physical materials, and by verifying call numbers or
other data, claiming missing items and removing superceded
volumes.
Organizing: Organizes physical materials and bibliographic data
by charging and discharging items, creating, updating or
correcting online patron or bibliographic records, physically
sorting, shelving and shifting materials, by retrieving,
processing, and delivering requested materials, maintaining
periodicals and serial files, or by generating various notices
and correspondence.
Preserving: Performs light maintenance of office equipment
(e.g., fax machine, printer, scanner workstations, scanners),
minor preservation of damaged materials, and pulling materials
for binding.
Interpreting: Aids patrons in the use of library resources by
performing such duties as assessing the status of items,
accepting interlibrary loan requests, searching for missing
materials, providing general directional or bibliographic
information, and working with users to solve routine problems
and to provide information on the status of items in the
collection.
Supervising: Maintains the operation of a Unit in the absence of
a supervisor following normal policies and procedures; oversees
a function on weekends including opening/closing a building,
office, or service desk; or by advising, directing or making
routine assignment to student assistants.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
One year of college education AND 6 months of library or related
clerical/customer service experience required; OR one year of
library or related clerical/customer service experience; OR any
equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education
from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been
achieved.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge and limited application of standard or
specialized library systems.
Skill in verbal and written communication.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software.
Ability to occasionally lift and move heavy materials and
equipment.
