SUMMARY

The Systems Administrator is a specialized, professional position. This position will demonstrate education and/or experience in designing, configuring, managing, capacity planning, and/or
assisting clients with computer server systems. The work of a Systems Administrator will vary according to the nature of the employing organization and the level of responsibility associated with the position posting.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs initial setup, software installation, testing, and security hardening
of computer server systems.

Performs daily operations of managing server systems.

Maintains software, including testing, evaluation and installation of new versions or authorized modifications to custom and vendor-supplied operating systems and related software. Performs software patching and keeps systems in compliance with applicable standards.

Designs, prepares software specifications and codes software programs for limited-scale to complex interactive systems, including language compilers, special utility programs, operating systems, communications support programs, and other subsystems.

Troubleshoots hardware/software problems and system failures.

Determines and initiates appropriate and immediate actions needed to restore normal services with minimal down time. Investigates recurring and related operating system failures/inefficiencies by reviewing system logs, dumps and other information from clients or technical personnel.

Identifies trends and source of problem(s), and recommends/initiates corrective action.

Works with hardware and software vendors to diagnose and correct problems.

Monitors and evaluates operating efficiency, analyzes hardware/software performance and tuning.

Designs, codes and installs modifications to tuning parameters to optimize systems or software.

Performs long-range and capacity planning studies to determine the type of resources needed to support expected volume, types of application systems and operating assurance.

Monitors systems backup procedures and executes recovery operations when necessary.

Prepares documentation of systems and software for permanent records.

Advises and trains clients regarding server systems.

Additional duties as assigned.
