Scientific Computing Professional
Assistant Duties
SUMMARY
The Scientific Computing Professional is a specialized,
professional position. This position will
demonstrate education and/or experience in a scientific
discipline such as GIS (Geographic
Information Systems), Bioinformatics, Genomics, Biochemistry,
Statistics, etc. as well as
education and/or experience in information technology
development or support.
The work of a Scientific Computing Professional will vary
according to the
nature of the employing organization and the level of
responsibility
associated with the position posting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs computer programming, data analysis and/or software
development consistent
with the mission and goals of the unit.
Serves as a systems administrator: maintains existing systems
and researches/develops
future enhancements. May oversee grid and cluster computing
resources.
Formulates and/or analyzes project proposals, identifies
omissions and errors in
requirements and conducts feasibility studies; recommends
optimum approach and
develops plans for approved projects. Advises on alternatives
and on implications of new
or revised projects.
Documents, designs, codes and tests models and/or applications;
designs and carries out
procedures.
Effectively manages time and resources to meet deadlines;
solicits feedback for improvement of future services or
projects.
Understands and utilizes scientific methodologies.
Adapts to changes in science and/or technology.
Develops or assists in the development and writing of grant
proposals.
Provides training; develops and/or delivers presentations;
creates reports and other
digital or print-based media or graphics.
Maintains knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment
and/or systems.
Interacts with units such as Environmental Safety, etc. to
ensure compliance with laws
and standards.
Provides technical support for LAN (Local Area Network) as well
as desktop hardware and
software.
Administers specialized scientific and/or computing facilities.
Participates in the overall management and administration of the
operating unit.
Oversees performance management and staff development
opportunities for those they
supervise.
Performs special projects and other duties as assigned. |
