Nurse Practitioner Duties
SUMMARY
This is a highly responsible nurse practitioner position
involving examining patients, conducting systematic and
comprehensive physical assessments, and developing a plan of
care.
An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for
obtaining a detailed medical history, performing comprehensive
physical assessments, developing a treatment plan of care, and
evaluating the patient's response. Work also involves
interpretation of data, development and implementation of
therapeutic plans and following through on the continuous care
of patients.
Work is performed with considerable independence under the
general medical direction of a physician. Work is guides by
internal policies and protocols and physician-approved
guidelines. Work is evaluated through chart review,
consultations, conferences, and the observation of results.
Performance is directly supervised and evaluated by nursing
management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides age-appropriate patient care to University students and
eligible members of the University community. Obtains medical
history and performs physical assessments appropriate to the
patient's presenting complaints and age.
Analyzes, interprets, and evaluates subjective and objective
findings to develop an assessment in order to initiate a
treatment plan or referral to appropriate physician or provider.
Performs routine therapeutic duties (e.g. providing first aid
care, wound care, suturing minor wounds and lacerations, suture
removal, incision and drainage procedures) and
collaborates/consults with the physician as indicated in Nurse
Practitioner protocols and University Health Center procedures
in accordance with privileges granted.
Develops a plan of care based upon assessment, which includes
prescribing appropriate medications and treatments, providing
follow-up care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care.
Promotes healthy living through education and primary
prevention. Provides patient education regarding medications,
treatments, anticipated outcomes, and referrals.
Provides appropriate documentation in the medical chart.
Attends and participates in staff conferences, clinic meetings,
committee meetings, and NP/PA meetings.
Obtains appropriate continuing medical education and maintains
licensure, national certification, and Georgia Board recognition
as a nurse practitioner.
Participates in performance improvement activities of the team
or department and demonstrates the ability to further and
support the Health Center's Mission, Vision, and Values.
Works effectively as a member of a team. Takes leadership
responsibility for completion of tasks when indicated and
satisfies team expectations regarding work habits
Contributes to the University Health Center service culture.
Demonstrates effective and professional communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; possession of a
license as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the State
of Georgia; certification as a Nurse Practitioner as recognized
by the Georgia Board of Nursing; and a minimum of two to three
years experience as a nurse practitioner (experience in college
health medicine, preferred).
Completion of a Masters degree level nurse practitioner program
or equivalent experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of professional nursing and basic medical
theory and practice.
Considerable knowledge of the nurse practitioner guidelines,
rules, regulations, and policies of the health care facility.
Ability to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings.
Ability to follow patients through periods of illness in an
independent or collaborative relationship with a physician.
Ability to coordinate preventive services and collaborate in the
ongoing care of patients.
Ability to act as a medical consultant to other nursing
personnel.
Ability organize and teach classes in the community.
