Equipment Operator Duties
SUMMARY
Performs skilled work in the operation of trucks, light
tractors, and related automotive equipment.
Operates trucks of less than six tons rated capacity or other
related equipment. Employees are responsible for the safe and
efficient operation of assigned trucks and similar automotive
equipment and for cleaning and servicing trucks and performing
minor maintenance work. Work is performed without direct
supervision.
Work involves the skilled operation and minor maintenance of
automotive and construction equipment of significant capacity
and operational complexity. Work is normally performed under the
supervision of a foreman, who issues instructions which may be
accompanied by diagrams or sketches, and who inspects work
during progress and upon completion. However, some independent
judgment is required in determining operating methods.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates medium duty construction vehicles for hauling dirt,
gravel or other construction site
materials.
Operates flatbed, forklift, dump truck, trailer or other truck
transporting material or crew to project site.
Operates large mechanical sweepers, front-end loaders, ditching
machines, hydraulic backhoes, and performs rigging tasks for
steel erection and other related crane operations.
Transports equipment and materials; grades and cleans park
areas, streets, and roads; excavates and fills for utility
installation and road and street grades.
Perform semi-skilled and unskilled labor involving rigging,
shoveling, ditch shoring, trench backfilling, compacting, pump
(dewatering) and other related tasks. Assist in PVC conduit
water main pipes, sewer and storm drain installations and
pouring of concrete trench encasements.
Performs routine maintenance inspection of vehicles, and
services with gas, oil, water and changes attachments.
Operates backhoe tractor and loader in excavation and
backfill/compactors.
Prepares simple records and performs equipment servicing and
minor maintenance operations.
Supervises semi-skilled and unskilled workers in absence of
supervisory personnel, as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the eighth grade of school and some work
experience, preferably performing manual labor; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge and skill in the operation and servicing
of various automotive and complex construction equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards involved in equipment
operation and the safety precautions necessary.
Ability to work outside during adverse conditions.
Ability to prepare simple reports.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to stoop, bend and squat for extensive periods of time.
Ability to lift 50 to 125 pounds.
Ability to operate flatbed, forklift, trailer or other truck
transporting material or crew to project.
Ability to operate trucks and equipment safely and in accordance
with traffic laws and regulations.
Ability to learn the general layout of the university and to
learn the routes to other locations.
Operates dump, flatbed, trailer, or other trucks in picking up
and delivering materials, debris, and supplies from place to
place; operates mechanical loaders, fork lifts, crawlers, trucks
with front end loaders, booms, and other equipment.
Drives packer type truck on established route in picking up
garbage and refuse; collects rubbish and trash.
Loads and unloads truck; performs minor maintenance work and
services vehicles with gas, oil, and water; operates light
wheeled gasoline tractors; operates trucks on road maintenance
and construction work hauling cold patch, gravel, and rocks.
Drives trucks in transporting personnel and materials to jobs.
Performs related work as required.
