Loan Collection Officer Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible work in the collection of delinquent student
accounts.
Duties of this position involve responsibility for the
collection of individual student accounts which become
delinquent and for supervision of a clerical staff in the
maintenance of all student loan accounts and records. Work
involves corresponding with students who have delinquent
accounts, locating unknown addresses, and counseling and
advising students of their repayment obligations. The employee
works with considerable independence under the general
supervision of an administrative superior. Work is reviewed
principally by evaluation of collection operations and analysis
of outstanding accounts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises the clerical section of the student loan office.
Examines delinquent student loan accounts and reviews the
financial status of individual students; attempts to make
collections by correspondence.
Conducts office interviews and telephone conversations with
students who are delinquent in the payment of accounts;
interviews students with loan obligations who are leaving the
university and advises them of their obligations and privileges
under the repayment terms.
Approves teacher cancellations; prepares special status on NDEA
loan funds.
Prepares annual reports concerning the status of the loan
collection office and uncollectible accounts.
Analyzes delinquent loans, and determines when legal action must
be taken, or collection agencies utilized.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of an Associate's degree in business, or a related
discipline AND one year of related experience or an equivalent
combination of experience, training and/or education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of effective collection techniques and
ability to apply those techniques to the collection of
delinquent student accounts.
Some knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, methods
and equipment.
Ability to compose effective collection correspondence.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with students and subordinate employees.
Ability to plan and supervise the maintenance of an appropriate
recordkeeping system for student loan accounts and credit
information.
