SUMMARY

This is the seventh in a series of eight titles for positions involving Veterinary Care. This series is identified by a predominant amount of time spent on the care of ill or injured client-owned animals brought to the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital in the hopes of recovery. Typical duties include the supervision or performance of basic care such as feeding & watering, cleaning cages, maintaining animal health records, collecting and analyzing specimens, conducting physical exams and tests (including ultrasounds, radiology, cardiology, etc.), administering medications, assisting with surgery (administering anesthesia & monitoring vital signs), posting service charges for each patient. Duties may also include teaching professional students and euthanizing animals.

The RVT Specialist position is distinguished from the RVT I & II positions in that it requires advanced experience and specialization in performance of the duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction of procedures, as well as advanced experience and performance of, all duties of RVT I and RVT II in a specialized field. These include:

Collection of blood, urine by expression, cystocentesis or catheterization.

Collection & preparation of tissue, cellular or microbiological samples by skin scraping.

Impressions.

Routine laboratory test procedures.

Radiology including settings, positioning, processing & safety.

Intravenous & arterial catheterization.

Administration & application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications & immunological agents by oral, parenteral & injectable routes.

Induction & maintenance of anesthesia.

Placement of intra-nasal, intra-gastric tubes.

Dental procedures.

Euthanasia.

Surgical assistance; resuscitative procedures; applications of splints & slings; application of appropriate wound dressings & external supportive care in severe wound & burn cases.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Associates or Bachelors degree in veterinary technology required and/or have met requirement for licensure in GA State PLUS 3 years of advanced experience as credentialed veterinary technician, and 2 years experience in a specialized veterinary medicine field

Certification and Licensure

Active license with the GA State Board of VET Medicine as a Veterinary Animal Technician or currently licensed in another State as credentialed veterinary technician and met all requirements to become licensed in GA within 6 months of employment AND Boarded in specialized field (as available) and/or obtained advanced degree or certification within veterinary medicine specialty
