Lab Animal Health Technician Duties
SUMMARY
This is the seventh in a series of seven titles for positions
involving laboratory animal research (these include Research
Animal Resources positions within the college of Arts &
Sciences, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the
college of Veterinary Medicine). This position is unique from
other positions in the series because it reports directly to the
attending veterinarian or designee. The Laboratory Animal Care
series is identified by a predominant amount of time spent on
the care of University-owned animals used in a research setting
or for a specific research project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform treatment and assistance with diagnostics of laboratory
animals used in research & teaching projects.
Anesthetize and euthanize animals.
Responsible for Quality Assurance and environmental monitoring.
Make rounds at all facilities (reviewing animal health/behavior
logs with Laboratory Animal Care Technicians).
Train other personnel and small groups in aspects of procedures
/ treatment.
Interact with (mostly internal) clientele.
Position reports directly to attending veterinarian or designee.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree; veterinary technician background; AALAS
certification required.
American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)
certification (current registry) and/or Registered Veterinary
Technician (RVT) required. Valid GA State Drivers License may be
required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of animal care and veterinary medicine;
ability to observe animal behaviors and diagnose & treat
problems.
