Forestry Technician Duties
SUMMARY
This is advanced technical and supervisory work in the operation
and maintenance of institutional forest lands.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
performing a variety of specialized, technical tasks requiring
considerable knowledge of, and experience with, forest resources
management techniques. Duties may also involve assisting in the
operation and maintenance of forestry programs and projects.
Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel. Work is
performed under the general direction of an administrative
superior and is reviewed through conferences and the observation
of results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and participates in technical forestry work.
Supervises and participates in the construction, operation, and
maintenance of forestry facilities and equipment.
Assists in instructing students and subordinate technical
personnel in forestry research methods, techniques, and
interpretation of results through informal methods and
demonstrations.
Assists in the development and implementation of instructional
and research materials.
Assists in the design and implementation of data collection
methodology to support research and teaching prefects and
various land-use programs.
Conducts supplies and equipment inventories, maintains
appropriate records.
Prepares reports from research generated data and literature
searches.
May independently conduct research in support of major research
projects.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university in an
appropriate curriculum and considerable experience related to
this class of work; or an equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of forestry operations.
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of
vehicles and equipment used in forestry operations.
Knowledge of road, bridge, and building construction and
maintenance.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements involved in
forestry operations.
Some knowledge of wildlife management as related to forestry
operations.
Some knowledge of data collection methodology.
Ability to supervise and/or train subordinate employees or
students.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with faculty, staff, students, and fellow
employees.
