Resume vs Vitae
Perhaps the first, and most basic of all types of professional
writing, is the resume and cover letter. Your first writing task for
this class will involve developing (or up-dating an existing) resume
and creating a cover letter to accompany your letter.
Resume vs. vitae (curriculum vitae)
Let's distinguish, first, between a resume and a vitae. A resume
is a short listing of recent accomplishments, employment, and
education relevant to a particular job or occupation, usually one or
two pages in length. By contrast, a vitae is a more complete record
of one's professional activities. Vitae are particularly common in
the field of education where it is important to document one's
teaching and publishing activities; a vitae will include, for
instance, a bibliography of papers a professor has published or
presented at professional conferences.
Where the vitae documents a life-time of accomplishments, the
resume intends to
- Assist prospective employers in sorting potential candidates.
- Provide the candidate with an opportunity to present
him/herself quickly.
- Help the candidate secure an interview.
- Accompany forms required by prospective employer.
