Origin: Carroll County was formed in 1837
from Baltimore and Frederick Counties (Chapter
256, Acts of 1835; confirmed by Chapter 19, Acts
of 1836, which was passed January 19, 1837). The
County was named for Charles Carroll of
Carrollton (1737-1832), Revolutionary War
statesman and a Maryland signer of Declaration
of Independence. |

area and a population density of 375.3 per
square mile. In the last three decades of the
1900s its population grew by 118.7%. On the 2000
census form, 99.3% of the population reported
only one race, with 2.3% of these reporting
African-American. The population of this county
is 1.0% Hispanic (of any race). The average
household size is 2.81 persons compared to an
average family size of 3.18 persons.
In 2005 retail trade was the largest of 20
major sectors. It had an average wage per job of
$22,869. Per capita income grew by 21.7% between
1994 and 2004 (adjusted for inflation). |
