Academic Advisor IV Duties
SUMMARY
This is professional and supervisory work responsible for
directing all aspects of academic advising. This is the fourth
in a series of four classifications, and is distinguished from
lower level positions in that is performed with a high degree of
autonomy under general supervision of the Associate Dean. Work
includes development of new programs and the dissemination of
information regarding a variety of degree requirements and
general University regulations. It performs needed assessments,
evaluates and analyzes unit's effectiveness; develops
recommendations initiates appropriate action to ensure
implementation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruits, trains, and supervises a large staff or professional
non-faculty lower division advisors and other office support
staff members;
Communicates essential academic registration information to
advisors and students;
Approves or denies exceptions to established registration
policies;
Communicates with representatives of professional schools and/or
programs that have pre-professional degree options;
Represents school or college on related university communities
and at all academic orientation sessions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a Master's degree in field appropriate to area of
assignment and two years appropriate experience; OR ten years of
progressively responsible experience; OR any equivalent
combination of experience and/or education from which comparable
knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations,
policies and procedures pertaining to a specific degree program;
Thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a
specific area of academic study;
Effective problem solving and interpersonal communication
skills;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships;
Knowledge and competence in computer skills;
Ability to interpret policies and procedures and effectively
communicate these to students and faculty;
Ability to plan, assign, and direct the work of other employees;
Knowledge of national developments in the field of academic
advising;
Skill in public speaking and effective writing;
Ability to apply original and creative thinking to develop and
improve methods and procedures. |
