Laboratory Manager Duties
SUMMARY
This is the fifth in a series of six titles for positions
involving the performance and management of positions in a
scientific laboratory. The Laboratory family series is
identified by a predominant amount of time spent on bench work.
These typical duties include running laboratory protocols, data
collection and recording (performing sample analysis for
external clients, maintaining laboratory equipment, calibrating
laboratory instruments), data management, data analysis and /or
assist with student labs in a "production" lab environment.
The Laboratory Manager I interprets results, adjusts procedures
if needed, assists with the technical design of projects, and
supervises students and staff. This position does not manage a
research project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage a group or service operation within a divisional
production laboratory.
Work with students and technicians to help them with performing
their analyses.
Coordinate maintenance of clinic and/or laboratory
instrumentation.
May write papers for publication in journals.
Responsible for HazMat, radioisotopes and other health and
safety requirements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree and 4 years experience or equivalent
combination required. Specialty certification may be required.
Masters degree preferred
Area-specific certification (i.e.; SCUBA) and training may be
required. Other training will be provided as appropriate (i.e.;
UGA HazMat training and/or Radiation Worker).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have basic ability to manage personnel and workflow,
maintain equipment and facilities.
Must insure effective communications with clientele.
