Mail Supervisor Duties
SUMMARY
This is clerical and supervisory work in the mailing operation
of a large organizational unit.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
supervising and participating in the management of all incoming
and outgoing mail for the unit, including the coordination of
pick-up and delivery from offices, the postal service annex, and
the campus mail room. Work also involves establishing effective
work routines and making recommendations regarding the varying
classes and mailing rates to employ. Employees work with
considerable independence within prescribed guidelines and are
reviewed by an administrative superior by observation of
performance and results obtained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Participates in and oversees the inserting, addressing, and
sorting procedures necessary to process bulk mailings, U.S., and
campus mail.
Maintains and operates postage meters.
Maintains records on deposit accounts at the post office
Maintains records on bulk mailings, certified, insured or other
special mail as it is received or mailed out.
Keeps abreast of new postage rates and regulations and maintains
liaison with post office personnel.
Makes recommendations regarding equipment repair and purchases.
Trains new employees in the procedures and methods utilized in
the mail room.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school and work experience which
provides a familiarity with postal rules and regulations; some
supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of
training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of post office and unit mail room rules
and regulations pertaining to processing mail.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to do some occasional heavy lifting.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with others.
Ability to make routine arithmetical computations quickly and
accurately.
