Medical Lab Technician Duties
SUMMARY
This is entry level technical work performing a wide variety of
tasks in a clinical laboratory under direct supervision.
Work involves responsibility for the performance of laboratory
tasks which require considerable accuracy and manual dexterity
in the preparation, maintenance, and care of laboratory
specimens and materials. Work requires the independent
performance of assigned tasks within established methods and
procedures. Detailed instructions are provided.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in medical research activities.
Performs standardized laboratory analysis and observations.
May prepare histological sections from tissue samples.
Participates in the preparation of laboratory media, specimens,
cultures, and reagents.
Sets up and prepares laboratory.
Assembles laboratory equipment; orders and inventories necessary
supplies and equipment.
Catalogs material and maintains accurate records of results.
May perform venipuncturist duties.
Receives and records receipt of specimens.
Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
Approved Clinical Laboratory Technician exam, if applicable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques used in
a clinical laboratory.
Working knowledge of the basic principles in the physical or
biological sciences.
Some knowledge of the methods and procedures of laboratory tests
and examinations.
Ability to make accurate observations and maintain reports of
test results.
Skill in laboratory manipulative techniques.
