Artist Duties
SUMMARY
This is artistic and limited supervisory work.
Work involves performing responsible technical and limited
supervisory functions in the preparation of design, layout, and
art work for various departments and information programs. Work
is performed with considerable independence under general
direction of an administrative superior and is reviewed by
observation of results obtained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and participates in the design and construction of
displays, visual aids, exhibits, and graphic art presentations.
Consults with administrative and professional personnel on
various phases of the departmental program and performs
necessary research work to obtain background information.
Supervises and participates in laying out posters, publications,
bulletins, and pamphlets; selects and places body type, heading,
photographs, and illustrations for printing layouts; hand
letters; makes drawing on stencils and off-set masters for
reproduction.
Assists with ordering supplies and equipment.
Copies photographs or other pictures to be used as illustrations
combining two or more photographs into one drawing; or copying
only a portion of one photograph or picture.
Consults with printers, engraves, and lithographers regarding
the proper layout and artistic presentation or material and
checks periodically to insure adequate reproduction of
illustrations.
Originates ideas for art work and makes freehand sketches and
designs.
Assists with the training of new personnel.
Maintains appropriate files and records.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major
course work in art and considerable experience in commercial or
graphic art work; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of principles, techniques, and media of
commercial art; considerable knowledge of layout, design, and
techniques of graphic presentation.
Considerable knowledge of color harmony, balance, lettering, and
freehand drawing.
Considerable knowledge of art materials, supplies, equipment,
printing practices, and photographic equipment.
Ability to plan, originate, design, and create illustrative and
exhibition material.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with
