Grounds Keeper Duties
SUMMARY
This is normal laboring work of more than ordinary difficulty in
the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks of a
physically demanding nature.
Work involves the performance of duties which are of a routine
nature and are performed with some degree of independence. The
more skilled tasks, however, are performed under closer
supervision. Specific instructions are normally received with
assignments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May review work performed by a small group of employees
performing related work.
May drive a truck and some light construction equipment,
involving responsibilities for safe and efficient operation.
Performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks maintaining grounds,
shrubbery, and lawns.
Digs ditches, sets stakes, and strings; plans and mortars cement
blocks; mixes cement and patches walks; helps run water and
sewer lines.
Performs general laboring tasks in mowing grass, cleaning
grounds; rakes leaves and trash; plants shrubs; prepares flower
beds and plants flowers, prunes shrubs, uses power and hand
tools as required.
Sprays lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer and
insecticides.
Waters lawns and shrubs during dry periods, using hose or by
activating fixed or portable sprinkler system.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to
completion of the eighth grade and some experience related to
this class of work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written
instructions.
Ability to use a variety of standard power and hand tools.
Ability to perform heavy normal labor, often under adverse
climatic conditions.
