Equipment Mechanic Duties
SUMMARY
Performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance
and repair of heavy and/or light construction equipment.
Work involves various repairs of all types of diesel powered
heavy construction equipment. Work is usually performed under
general supervision of a foreman, but individual must use
independent judgement and resourcefulness in performing
mechanical repair work, especially when repairs are made in the
field.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspects, repairs, and adjusts graders, scrapers, trenching
machines, pans, backhoe, diesel tractors, hydraulic and cable
operated attachments, and earth moving bulldozers.
Overhauls, adjust, and tunes diesel and gasoline engines;
overhauls transmissions.
Rebuilds and replaces tractor undercarriages; changes tracks,
rollers, and frames.
Repairs miscellaneous equipment such as welding machines and
fork lifts.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or graduation from a standard vocational
school and ? years of experience at the journeyman level in the
repair of heavy construction equipment; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and
standard practices of heavy/light equipment mechanical work.
Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance
requirements of various types of heavy/light construction
equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the mechanical trades
and of necessary safety precautions.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions.
Ability to locate and diagnose defects in diesel and gas powered
equipment.
Skill in the use of tools and equipment and their care in the
repair and maintenance of heavy/light equipment.
