Chemical Applicator Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose of Classification:

Applies chemicals to plants, trees, and grass to enhance plant growth and control weeds and pests. Maintains and monitors the pest control programs, to include bats, bees, and rodents in compliance with EPA, OSHA, and State and Federal Regulations.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is a skilled and specialized classification that is not part of a series. Working conditions include contaminated air; extreme temperatures, and hazardous Materials.

Examples of Duties:

  • Sets-up and operates hand and power spray equipment to spray, dust, and/or spread various chemicals and other designated materials including pesticides, herbicides, soil sterilants, grass killer, hormones, fertilizers, seeds, and specified soil amendments.
     
  • Installs, adjusts, and performs minor repairs on application equipment.
     
  • Maintains rodent traps and bait stations inside and outside of buildings.
     
  • Monitors bat and bird activity on the facility and removes as appropriate.
     
  • Maintains records on chemical application activities in compliance with EPA, OSHA, and State and Federal regulations.
     
  • Maintains work area, chemical storage area, and equipment in a condition that promotes good safety practices and in compliance with OSHA, Structural Pest Control Commission, and ASU Risk Management.
     
  • Schedules and coordinates regularly scheduled pest control activities and responds to trouble calls; serves as a front line representative between Facilities Management and users regarding pest management issues.
     
  • Assists in preparing pest control estimates for contractor bids and service work orders.
     
  • Responds to Africanized Bee trouble calls and removes as appropriate.
     
  • Oversees contractors; inspects for termites and other structural pest problems.
     
  • Assists in maintaining and updating Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemical usage.
     
  • Assists in training grounds staff in pest and weed control safety and in fertilizer use applications.
     
  • Maintains equipment and tools used in chemical application and sends out for service as required.
     
  • Acquires and stores pesticide solutions; mixes or dilutes specified chemicals or materials according to directions and applies them at the recommended rate.
     
  • Instructs helpers, as required, in applying sprays, dusts, and other materials.
     
  • Inspects indoor and outdoor areas and recommends extermination and pest control methods.
     
  • Schedules pest and weed controls.
     
  • May assist in the upkeep of the grounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of chemical application regulations and techniques.
     
  • Skill in the application of chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two (2) years of chemical applications experience and possession of a current Pesticide Applicator License with the State of Arizona Structural Pest Control Commission, (Arizona Restricted Use Pesticide Certificate) and certification in one of the following categories: Turf & Ornamental Horticulture (B-5), Right of Way & Weed Control (B-3); General Pest & Public Health (B-1) and ability to obtain the remaining two within five months of employment; OR, Two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience and possession of a current Pesticide Applicator License with the State of Arizona Structural Pest Control Commission, (Arizona Restricted Use Pesticide Certificate) and certification in one of the following categories: Turf & Ornamental Horticulture (B-5), Right of Way & Weed Control (B-3); General Pest & Public Health (B-1); and ability to obtain the remaining two within five months of employment. Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver's license upon employment. Must pass a post-offer employment chemical Applicator Physical examination with respiratory clearance and be able to utilize a half-face mask negative pressure respirator. May be required to obtain within six months of employment, Control of Wood-Destroying Insects (B-2); and/or, Wood Destroying Inspect Inspection (B-8). May be required to obtain a Qualifying Party License and a New Business License to be used at Arizona State University. Some positions may be required to operate power lift equipment and work at heights.
