SUMMARY

Coordinates daily custodial work and performs manual work in a variety of cleaning and related duties performed in and around university buildings and facilities. This includes classrooms, residence halls, guest rooms, lab rooms and offices. Primary responsibility is for the effective use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for building areas and equipment. Individual works under very limited supervision and work is checked for adherence to established practices and schedules. May exercise limited supervision over other building service workers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates daily custodial work.

Sweeps, mops, scrubs, buffs, and waxes floors; dusts and cleans chalk boards and offices; washes windows, walls, trash cans, glass doors, and classroom equipment; frequently works from a ladder.

Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; cleans drinking fountains.

Runs polishing machine and vacuum cleaner.

Moves office and dormitory furniture and equipment.

Cleans laboratories.

Replaces light bulbs, cleans and polishes brass, and unstops lavatories and toilets.

Empties trash and sweeps outside walks.

Reports damaged structures and equipment.

Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

One year industrial, custodial or related experience. Also desired is a knowledge of floor machines and materials used in maintenance of carpet and resilient floors and experience working from high ladders.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to plan and organize routine work details, including receiving and carrying out instructions.

Considerable knowledge of a wide variety of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the use and care of a variety of cleaning equipment.

Ability to climb stairs and ladders; bend at the waist and knees; lift and move items weighing up to 40 lbs.; work from a ladder and work with arms and hands overhead.

Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment.

Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces.

Ability to work long hours at manual tasks.
