Fermentation Plant Supervisor Duties
SUMMARY
This is supervisory and administrative work in the operation and
maintenance of a fermentation plant facility. An employee in
this class is responsible for setting up schedules for the use
of the fermentation plant. The day to day operations are
directed at the employee's discretion, but problems are referred
to an administrative superior. Work is performed under general
supervision.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs the operation of specialized fermentation plant
equipment such as various types of fermentors, centrifuges, heat
exchanger/chiller system, and the cell extractor.
Prepares cultures for a variety of campus projects; prepares
inoculant; sets up inoculation equipment.
Keeps records of lab usage; schedules time for principal
investigators of particular experiments or projects to have lab
time; arranges lab time for off-campus users.
Orders supplies for the lab; makes arrangements for equipment
repairs.
Operates standard laboratory equipment such as Mettler balance,
microscope, colorimeter, pH meter, centrifuge, autoclave, and
incubator.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an approved college or university with major
course work in the biological sciences or completion of course
work in a technical program from a vocational school; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of laboratory fermentation technology and
related mechanical equipment.
Skill in setting up fermentation plant equipment for
experiments.
Skill in handling cultures and maintaining culture purity.
Ability to schedule the lab's work load to function in the most
efficient manner possible.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with professors, researchers, technicians,
students, and fellow workers. |
